Export-Import License

An import license is a document that authorizes the holder to import goods into Malaysia. Depending on the type of product, there are different types of permits required. 

Yes, you need an import license to import goods into Malaysia from overseas. Traders who want to import or export items that require a license must first contact the Malaysian Companies Commission. A company must then register with the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) before applying for an import license.

You will need an import license if: 

• You are importing controlled goods, such as arms and ammunition, chemicals, or endangered species.
• You are importing goods from a Free Trade Zone.
• You are importing strategic goods, such as telecommunications equipment or certain types of computer software.
• Your import requires a permit from the Malaysian government.

To obtain an import licence in Malaysia, you must apply to the Malaysian Ministry of International Trade and Industry. Your application should include a business plan, financial statements and information on the products you intend to import. The Ministry will then assess your application and determine whether or not to issue a licence. If your application is approved, you will be issued a licence allowing you to import products into Malaysia.

Import licenses for capital goods are valid for 24 months, while all other goods only have a license validity of 18 months.

Traders must first register with the Companies Commission of Malaysia to import or export items that need a license. Once registered, a firm must apply for an import license from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI).
