SPAN License

SPAN license is necessary for any company that wishes to provide water or sewerage services in Malaysia. The permit ensures that water and sewerage companies operate safely and efficiently and provide quality services to their customers.

Any company that wishes to provide water or sewerage services in Malaysia must apply for a SPAN license from the Malaysian Water Services Commission. The application process is as follows: 

• Submit an application form to the Malaysian Water Services Commission.
• Include all required supporting documents with the application form. 
• Pay the prescribed application fee. 
• The Malaysian Water Services Commission will assess the application and decide whether to issue a license. 
• If the license is issued, the company must comply with all the terms and conditions of the license. 

The requirements for a SPAN license vary depending on the type of water or sewerage service the company wishes to provide. In order to obtain a SPAN license in Malaysia, you must be a citizen or permanent resident of Malaysia or a local company. You must also have at least five years of experience working in the water and sewer industry.

You cannot carry out any water and sewerage-related works in Malaysia without a SPAN License. This includes the construction, alteration, maintenance or repair of any water supply or sewerage infrastructure. Not having a SPAN License can lead to delays in important construction projects and can increase project costs due to the need to obtain one. Additionally, those with no valid license may be liable for a fine of up to RM50,000 under the current law.

It typically takes between 3-6 months to process and approve a SPAN License application. However, this timeframe may be extended depending on the complexity of the application type, as well as the completeness and accuracy of the supporting documentation submitted. In addition, please note that water and sewerage charges are applicable for all developments in Malaysia.
